Whether it's for your kitchen, bathroom or newly renovated laundry room, Multi-Trade Building Services can provide you with a beautiful new countertop.
Depending on your needs, budget and style, there are many different types of counters to choose from.
Laminate: Laminate countertops are fabricated by gluing a thin layer of 1/16- or 1/32-inch plastic to particleboard. Benefits: Many designs now closely imitate the look of wood and stone, about 2/3 the price of granite or quartz, simple to maintain and clean. Disadvantages: easily scorched by hot objects, can easily by damaged by sharp object
Solid Surface: Commonly known by its brand name of Corian, it is a man-made and manufactured by
mixing acrylic or polyester resin with powdered bauxite filler and pigments. Benefits:
non-porous, strong and resists impact better than laminate, scratches can be
sanded out. Disadvantages: vulnerable to scratches and easily discoloured by
Granite: a naturally occuring igneous
rock. It is a one of a kind, natural
surface that has an almost luminous look. Benefits: granite does not
depreciate in value and actually adds value to your home, formed by heat and
pressure so it can take the heat of a pan, easy to clean with warm water and
detergent. Disadvantages: must be sealed yearly to remain water impermeable,
can crack if hit with a hard object like a meat cleaver, doesn’t produce a
uniform look because each slab of granite is different
Quartz: manufactured from 95% crushed
quartz and 5% polymers. Benefits:
uniformity of colour and design, no sealing or polishing needed,
maintenance free, resistant to stains, scratches and heat. Disadvantages: doesn’t have the look of natural stone, long
term exposure to sunlight can cause discolouration, ongoing exposure to heat can damage
the counter, although they add value to a home over laminate counters, the
value is less than that of a granite counter
